| The rapid depletion
of traditional sources of energy (coal, oil, and natural gas)
and an ever-growing demand for energy have turned the world's
attention towards development of alternative energy resources.
Renewable-energy systems use resources that are constantly
replaced by nature and usually have less impact on the environment.
COMSATS' areas of interest include energy derived from biomass,
solar and micro hydel technologies.
Under the project support from
UNESCO and with technical assistance of Pakistan Council of
Appropriate Technology (PCAT), COMSATS has installed some
Bio-gas plants in the suburbs of Islamabad, Pakistan. These
are being used successfully by the locals for cooking & heating.
Another project of 1 Mega-Watt Solar-thermal power plant for
Pakistan has been provided funds by UNESCO and will soon be
implemented. Work has also been initiated on development of
Hydel Power Plants in Pakistan, in collaboration with Pakistan
Council of Appropriate Technology (P.C.A.T) and Hangzhou Regional
Centre (Asia Pacific) for Small Hydro-Power (HRC). The purpose
is to provide decentralized low-cost energy to the surrounding
rural/industrial areas, which are off the national grid and
have little chance to get access in the near future.
