| The growth of science
and technology in the South has increasingly been hampered
by lack of commitment on the part of governments and scarcity
of financial resources to support academic activities. There
have been very few incentives for the personal and intellectual
growth of the scientists, thus leading to brain drain, which
has created an intellectual vacuum in the third world. COMSATS
has started scholarship programme to address this critical
issue. Currently, this programme is sponsoring around 20 students
from COMSATS member countries. Initially, scholarships have
been announced at the following institutions:
- HEJ Research Institute of Chemistry, Karachi University,
Karachi - Pakistan
- International Centre of Climate and Environmental Sciences
(ICCES), Beijing - China
- COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT), Islamabad
- Pakistan
- National University of Science and Technology (NUST),
Islamabad - Pakistan
- Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences
(PIEAS), Islamabad - Pakistan
- Damascus University, Damascus - Arab Republic of Syria
