Distance-learning or distance-education
is a useful means of making high quality training in a range
of subjects accessible to areas that are remote or disadvantaged
in terms of access to advanced training opportunities or learned
instructors. The rapid developments in the information-technologies
and increasing access to the Internet is having a profound
influence on the character of distance-learning, which has
made possible the direct and immediate interaction between
students and teachers through e-mail, conference boards, net
meeting, net telephony, fax, etc. Course content and delivery
is made available, anytime and any place, from a variety of
sources including standard textbooks, instructor-created web
pages, Internet links, video, television and print.
Banking on its superior Internet expertise,
COMSATS is doing a pilot-scale distance-learning project with
Alliance Francaise, French Linguistic Centre in Islamabad.
The project aims to initiate web-based French language training
in otherwise inaccessible areas of Pakistan. It would open
the doors to higher education and the French scholarship programmes
for Pakistani youth. In future, COMSATS seeks collaborations
to initiate distance-learning programmes for science & technology
disciplines, also.
