COMSATS Organized International Events in Egypt

The Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (COMSATS), with its focused efforts in the field of Bio-Sciences, has held two workshops in Egypt. COMSATS organized these events in close collaboration with its S&T Center of Excellence in Egypt, the National Research Center (NRC), Cairo. From COMSATS, Mr. M. Barkaat Ali, Senior Assistant Director, participated in the events.

Both the workshops ‘Agro-Food Processing to Promote Sustainable Development’ and ‘Plant Biotechnolog: A New Promise for Sustainable Development’ that commenced on the 3rd of this month concluded after highlighting the efforts being made at regional level in the fields of plant biotechnology and agro-food sciences. The broad objectives of the workshop on Agro-Food Processing were to review the recent trends in food-processing technologies and to promote the means of sustainable small scale food-processing businesses. On the other hand the workshop on Plant biotechnology focused to create an atmosphere for exchanging latest information on plant biotechnology and to provide practical training on recent advances in this field.

The events were participated by a large section of scientists, technologists and researchers from various academic and research institutions. More than nine countries were represented at the workshops that included countries such as Italy, Jordan, Libya, Syria, Turkey, and Pakistan. During the course of these events number of educated talks were delivered, these included talks from Prof. Ahmad Parveez Ghulam Kadir of Malaysia, Prof. Prof. Rino Cella of Italy and Prof. Erik Nielson also from Italy.
