Seminar of Lectures on “Nobel Prizes in Physics” Inaugurated at COMSATS

Dr. S. M. Junid Zaidi, Rector COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT), inaugurated the Seminar of the Series of Lectures on “Nobel Prizes in Physics” at COMSATS Headquarters on 23rd October 2003. The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics - Pakistan Chapter" (ASICTP - PC) has launched a series of seminars, highlighting the scientific achievements for which Nobel Prizes in Physics were awarded during the last one hundred years and this Seminar was the first such event of this series.

Dr. Zaidi, while delivering his inaugural address emphasized the role of Physicists in the scientific progress and resultant sustainable development of developing countries like Pakistan and impressed upon other organizations to conduct enlightening and knowledgeable lecture seminars such as this.

Earlier, Dr. Imtinan Ellahi Qureshi, President ASICTP-PC welcomed the guests and thanked COMSATS for sponsoring this event of immense significance. He especially thanked the Executive Director COMSATS for permitting the setting up of the ASICTP-PC office at COMSATS Headquarters and praised COMSATS efforts in promoting science-led sustainable development in Pakistan and other member countries.

The inaugural lecture was delivered by Prof. Dr. Kamaluddin Ahmed, who is a Meritorious Professor, the Former Chairman, Department of Physics, Quaid-i-Azam University and Advisor in Physics to the COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT). His talk was in commemoration of the 2002 Nobel Prize in Physics, partly awarded to Raymond Davis, Jr. (USA) and Masatoshi Koshiba (Japan), for their pioneering work in the field of Neutrino Detection. Prof. Kamaluddin elaborated on the significance of the elusive elementary particle "Neutrino" in theoretical physics and its importance for astrophysics in his talk entitled "Neutrino, the Ambassador from Outer Space".
