We are pleased to invite you to the first workshop on Plasma Physics and Laser Induced Plasma Spectroscopy (LIPS) and Applications. This meeting is part of a research network project of Algeria, Egypt and Tunisia - ICTP-code NET45 - on "Detection of water pollutants by Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy".

The workshop will include invited lectures, oral communications, poster presentations and round table discussions. Communications and posters should describe original results of research work. Authors are encouraged to submit reports on works in progress so that it may provide an informal forum for discussing the research work in its early stages. Each contribution should emphasize the problem under consideration, the results and the importance of the work.

This workshop is dedicated to all essential aspects of the development of the diagnostic of Plasma by analysis of its spectral line shape emission and its applications in environment, medicine, archaeology, industry, and agriculture.

Aims/Objectives

The meeting is mainly aimed at:

  • Creating the opportunity for researchers involved in Plasma Physics to meet and discuss theoretical and experimental, fundamental and applied aspects of fields such as Laser Induced Plasma Spectroscopy (LIPS), Laser Ablation, LIDAR, Arc Plasmas, Discharge Plasma.
  • Sharing information and facilitating exchange of experience regarding Plasma Physics and its Applications, and Plasma diagnostics, with emphasis on Spectroscopic methods.
  • Reinforcing the existing, and establish new, joint research activities with the Laser and Plasma Physics communities.
  • Developing links and promoting the idea for a South Research Centre for Plasma Physics that will provide a frame for Laser Spectroscopy, which constitutes with the development of Lasers.

Topics/Subjects

A. Fundamentals and Basic Processes of Plasmas

  • Mechanisms of Plasma Generation
  • Radiation and Energy Absorption, Transport and Emission
  • Thermal and Non-equilibrium Plasma
  • Spectral line Broadening
  • Modelling and Simulation

B. Applications of Plasmas Spectroscopy

  • Environmental Investigations: air, water, solids
  • Art and Archaeology
