International
Workshop on Computational Mathematics & Related Topics, July 29-30,
2002, Islamabad - Pakistan
Department of Mathematical
Sciences, COMSATS Institute of Information Technology, Sir Syed Campus,
Attaturk Ave., Islamabad, Pakistan
COMSATS Institute
of Information Technology (CIIT), founded in 1998, underscores its commitment
to the centrality of teaching, learning and scholarship, of value-based
education grounded in our tradition, of lifelong learning and of educating
the community in information technology and sciences.
The Department of
Mathematical Sciences is a component of the CIIT providing teaching support
for all the areas in mathematical sciences of the Institute. Located in
the heart of Islamabad, the Department is going to start PhD program in
Computational Mathematics.
There is a growing
interest in Computational Mathematics allover the world, and a parallel
growth in the use of mathematical and computer modeling to help solve
both industrial and societal problems. To this end the Department of Mathematical
Sciences has chalked out a program for a workshop on computational mathematics.
A key goal of this workshop is to bring together practicing applied and
computational mathematicians to exchange the latest research information
and to promote outreach computational and applied mathematics networks
in Pakistan. A common experience proves that computational methods originally
developed in basic / applied sciences can be of considerable importance
to other sciences as well as to engineering and information technology.
This beneficial practice of cross-fertilization will be continuously and
systematically endorsed by the workshop.
The workshop on Computational
Mathematics aims to facilitate discussions between faculty, students and
mathematicians working in this field. The workshop will provide opportunity
for cooperation with academia by bringing together people from a variety
of very active areas within Computational Mathematics. Talks will be given
by a broad range of researchers and will present new developments in both
theory and applications of Computational Mathematics. The workshop also
aims at attracting new researchers to this exciting and fast growing area.
Participation
The Participants
will be provided free accommodation. However, the travel expanses will
be born by the participants / their institution.
Participation from
academics and IT industry are welcome, and students are encouraged to
attend, This workshop should be of particular interest to:
- Those considering
starting an computational mathematics program, or interested in curriculum
issues related to Computational Mathematics needs.
- Faculty or students
wishing to learn about computational techniques.
- People interested
in developing or participating in Computational programs or other collaborative
ventures.
Typically, but not
exclusive, topics of interest include:
- Complexity Theory
- Computer Algebra
and Computational Group Theory
- Computational Fluid
Dynamics
- Optimization
- Scientific Computing
& Numerical Analysis
- Ring Theory and
related topics
Format of Workshop
The workshop will
consist of invited talks and approximately 13 contributed talks. The talks
will be designed for an audience of non-specialists, in particular, for
students and researchers wishing to learn about the area. The talks will
be designed to discuss current developments in the field.
