COMSATS
invited as an Inter-Governmental Organization (IGO) at the World Summit,
August 2002
Commission on Science
and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (COMSATS) has
been accredited as an Inter-Governmental Organization (IGO) with the United
Nations Protocol and Liaison Service. The subject accreditation comes
as a recognition of COMSATS' relevance to and competence in the field
of sustainable development. The status will help COMSATS expand its participation
in different activities / programmes of the United Nations.
As an accredited IGO,
COMSATS has been automatically considered for participation in the UN
World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), scheduled to be held from
26 August - 4 September, 2002, at Johannesburg, South Africa. The Johannesburg
Summit 2002 will bring together a large number of participants, including
Heads of States, Inter-Governmental (IGOs) and Non-Governmental Organizations
(NGOs), businesses and other major development agencies to converge the
world's attention and stimulate direct action toward meeting difficult
challenges faced by us today.
Some of the cross-cutting
themes include sustainable management and conservation of natural-resources;
environmental health; globalization for sustainable development, including
issues relating to international trade and finance; links between globalization
and social issues; better governance and democratic decision-making processes,
as well as, education, science and technology.
