3rd Executive Management Seminar on Environment and Health (Under Joint PAEC-UNDP/RCA/IAEA Project RAS/8/082)

Introduction

Pollutants that degrade our air, water, and soil make it difficult for our environment to support life and long term development. There is strong evidence of an association between pollution exposure and an increased risk of airway disease and lung cancer, cardiovascular, endocrine, hematological, immunological, dermatological, reproductive and teratogenic effects. Recently, it has been discovered that there are more and more cases of people with asthma and eczema than ever before, not necessarily resulting directly from air and water pollution, but definitely made worse by it.

Effective measures, which can eliminate or considerably reduce hazardous factors from the human environment to minimize the associated health risks, must be identified and eradicated collectively. In order to achieve these objectives, suitable experimental, modelling and analysis techniques need to be applied to reach a balanced assessment of the risks and benefits involved.

PAEC together with the IAEA, EPA, COMSATS, is organizing a seminar, the third in the series, to provide a forum for the presentation and exchange of latest information and issues dealing with the recent developments in the field of environment and health. This event will provide an excellent opportunity for closer collaboration between the public health agencies, environmental protection agencies. NGOs, universities, research institutions and controlling authorities.

The scope of the proposed seminar will include the following areas:
